Aloha and welcome

Forest Bird Vase.

Here are a few samples of my pottery, much of which is inspired by the flora and fauna of our beautiful island. I moved to Hawaii in 1998 and since then have been learning about the natural and cultural history of these islands. Exploring the amazing diversity of climate, landscape and people has been a wonderful experience. It is a privilege to live in a place where one can be so close to the elements - the ocean, the volcanoes and the amazing rocks they create, the forests with unique plants and birds, the wind, the mists and rain, the sun, moon and stars.
Birds have been a special source of inspiration to me over the years and Hawaii has a variety of native and introduced bird species. However, due to loss of habitat from development, competition with introduced species, and introduced disease and predators, many of the native Hawaiian species are now endangered. I am particularly concerned with the future survival of the beautiful forest birds of Hawaii. I hope to do what i can to aid efforts to reestablish viable populations of these birds, so that future generations will have the opportunity to enjoy a walk in the native Hawaiian forest, listening to the delicate tapestry of bird songs. Towards this end, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of my pottery is donated to the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center, located in Volcano, HI, a facility dedicated to captive breeding and release of endangered Hawaiian forest birds.        Photos - Sarah Anderson.
