Janice
Gail came to Hawaii more than 20 years ago, attracted by
the beauty, the light, and the Aloha Spirit. From her childhood
home in California where she began drawing at age three,
her education and life as an artist has led her through
an array of experiences. Trained in Design and Illustration,
she has drawn and painted her way through many diverse
subjects, in a variety of media: Portraits and the Figure,
Floral and Still Life, Landscapes & Seascapes in Oil,
Pastel, Pencil, Watercolor, and Pen & Ink. Janice has
recently been active with the Interior Design community,
accepting assignments for indoor and outdoor murals, and
installations in wood and stone. Many of her paintings
and designs have found their way into private collections
all over the world, and many were commissioned by residents
or visitors. She is currently represented in Waimea by
the Firehouse Gallery, The Gallery of Great Things, and
the Quilted Horse; at Waipi`o Valley Artworks in Kukuihaele;
in Honokaa at the Blue Lotus Gallery, the Bamboo Gallery,
and Taro Patch Gifts; and in Hilo at Dreams of Paradise.

There have been numerous shows, including Solo Exhibitions,
both in Hawaii and on the Mainland, and Juried Exhibitions
resulting in First and Second Awards; the most prestigious
of these being a Purchase Award by the State Foundation
on Culture and the Arts. A recent emphasis on paintings
of local architectural landmarks, and the individual histories
surrounding them, has centered her focus; Janice hopes
her images of these examples of “plantation” style
homes and businesses will always recall the gentle times
they represented. She says, “ There is still Aloha
here, tucked away in the corners, hiding behind a hedge
of hibiscus or resting in the shade on the lanai, waiting
for those who seek it. I remember that blessed peace, and
that’s the motivation for my creative muse.”

Keeping that peace in mind, Janice offers private and
group painting classes, and her “Art Safaris” have
become a popular and pleasant addition to the Island ’s
visitor experience. “Painting the beauty of Hawaii
in a natural setting has proven qualities of healing and
stress relief!” says Janice, who can attest personally
to this therapeutic effect. She’s taught art all
over Hawaii for over 15 years, to adults and children,
in groups and individually. For more information, or to
